Folks, the weekend has arrived, and with it – maybe your last chance to dive into our final three screenplays. Don’t leave the cramming to the last second, find a cosy seat , your beverage of choice , and make sure you cast your all-important vote!

I have another question for you today – when you read a screenplay, what’s the most important aspect you keep an eye out for? To make things interesting, I’m only allowing you to vote for one answer. So choose carefully.

• High concept hook / Bold new take
• Relatable characters / Emotional engagement
• Incredible dialogue
• Visual storytelling
• Stakes / Conflict
• Authenticity / Vulnerability
• Personality / Stylistic flair

Kind of an impossible choice but I’d go with relatable characters. So long as I care deeply about the protagonist I don’t care if the stakes are galaxy spanning or miniscule.

Interesting that you say that. In my opinion caring about the characters is more of a stakes issue. I can care about someone’s success without finding them relatable. See any sports movie ever. Hell, see the wolf of wall street. Or Clockwork Orange.

Not to sit on the fence, but I think you’re both right. A character needs stakes to be relatable. This is exactly why it’s such an impossible question!

The more I read the more I see the same style and turn of phrase used over and over and over. Some flair and unique style really goes a long way to stand out.
