Career-obsessed Ellie escapes her hometown for a shiny new city, but when Thanksgiving looms, she must brave her overbearing mother’s wrath and confront the sacrifices she’s made for a life she’s no longer certain she wants.
Anyone else find themselves close to tears while reading this? I found the script to be incredibly simple yet powerful. It goes to show that sometimes the most incredible writing is based on something relatable and raw. The intergenerational dialogue between Ellie, Mom, and Grandma, the provocation of emotions, and the relatedness to the reader made me tear up, miss my mom, and find a connection to my life through the characters and each of their perspectives. Such a beautiful piece of art.
100% agree. The power in this short absolutely comes from its simplicity and its universal theme. Great writing on display.
As mentioned, I’m a big fan of the dramas this year, and this is up there. It manages to feel so momentous and climactic when it’s about something as innocuous as a trip to the grocery. Really talented writing.
This one is short and simple, but emotionally impactful. It reminded me a lot of Lady Bird, it felt like something that could have happened after that film’s ending. It also made me think if that could happen to me someday. Great work, I’d love to see what happens next.
Great insight as usual, Lucca. I’m with you, I found it worryingly relatable at how overwhelmed Ellie became when faced with a couple of manageable tasks.
Powerful drama. I always remember on the holidays how lonely people can be.
