After yet another argument between his parents, a young boy who dreams of becoming a pianist shatters into two halves and must find a way to reunite himself before he remains divided forever.
Loved this, I could see it very distinctly. Would be interested to see what kind of animation would be used. The porcelain gave me Coraline sort of vibes.
I saw it more like the Paperman short by Disney or Pixar (or both?)
Hi! I’m really glad you like it. I’m Leonardo The author!
My main reference are “My life as a courgette” and an italian movie called “l’arte della felicità ”.
I love stop animation but for this short we thought we want two type of animation:
1)kind of cut out for the shadows of the parents
2) more Simple and then energetic for Lorenzo! (Like in the anime “your name is april”). So 2d animation
We want the animation to become more fluid in the main climatic scenes when Lorenzo plays. This could give a contrast from the start where the animation are minimalistic, and simple.
I hope to have answerd your thoughts
Sorry for my English, my italian it’s better ahahah
Yes! I love pixar narration and simple way of telling story but we are trying to mix cut out and traditional 2d animation. We also want to make the backgrounds stand out thanks to a painting vibes they have.
But Pixar is of course a narrative and main reference as a director. It’s my first time, I usualy only write, but I’m trying to learn from the best. Thank you for your answer btw :)
Hey there, welcome to the forum and thank you for contributing! It’s awesome to hear all your references and inspirations. My own question: did you ever consider a version with dialogue, or did you always envision this as a soundtrack / music based film? Love your work, congrats on making the top 26 and good luck! ![]()
Thanks for the kind words. The firtst drafts was with some dialogue of the parents. But to lower the production cost we decide to use only sounds, without dubbing. We thought it could help lower the cost and I think it is also a smart artistic decision. The short uses sounds in a meaningfull way and in this way we can create a rich and narrative sound design. I also love when movies are able to show without words. For example the cinema of Kim ki duk and my favourite scene of all time: the Rattatouille’s flashback where Ego turns back to his childhood and eats the ratouille. To me this what powerfull mute scene can do: they leave you speachless with power. So yeah: it was a mix of production needs and an artististic and narrative choice.
This was a short but very insightful read. The visuals and use of music are so creative. Feels like a Pixar short, but with Spiderverse-style animation.
Thanks for the great insight! You really know your animation, lots of great references in your comments. If you had to pick a favourite animated feature, what’s #1?
Thank you so much!
Spiderves is amazing, that’s such a cool compliment and I love and ardore Pixar!
I will tell the animation and graphic team about your comment, they will be so happy. Thank you again.
Thank you, I really love animation movies and series
My favourite is Ratouille ahaha, it’s also One of the best movie of all time(in my personal and total humble opinion). I think it’s perfect:
Other animation movies I love are: Kung fu Panda (1/2), The Iron Giant, Porco Rosso(Myazaki), and the tale of princess Kaguya(Takhata), and Shrek.
I would love one day to write and maybe direct dome movies than even resemble the ones I’m writing.
Anyway thank again for you questions and curiosity.
