Jinglepuss

A depressed man who accidentally runs over the beloved neighbourhood cat must hide the murderous act from his intimidating neighbour who is out to inflict punishment on the perpetrator, all while being haunted by its jingling collar.

The concept is basically Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’, but with a jingling cat collar that is haunting the guilty protagonist in a darkly comedic way. It definitely has some horror overtones and imagery.

Hey Jeff, good shout on the Tell-Tale Heart. If instead of trying to convince the reader that the narrator isn’t totally crazy, this protagonist is trying to convince the reader that he’s a total loser lol

I was instantly hooked on this story. It’s very funny when it wants to, but its atmosphere also leans a lot into psychological horror. It’s a great combination, but I was most impressed by the visual storytelling throughout. The way the protagonist is introduced is hilarious. And the sound effects make for a very dynamic read.

Hey Jeff, congrats on making the top 26 and thanks for sharing your teaser. We’re big fans. We’d love to know what your inspirations were when sitting down to write Jinglepuss, and what your long term vision is for the story.

I can clearly recall the inception of the premise of Jinglepuss. I was driving home late one night and almost hit a cat crossing the road. Slammed on and screeched my brakes in front of a grocery store. And I wondered what I would have done had I hit it. Like a moral test.

And since the grocery store was right there, I also wondered what if the person was obsessed with food to an unhealthy degree, which is a challenge I struggle with personally.

And I thought it was the perfect examination and dramatization of a person’s character. Like a darkly humoured character study.

I was also heavily inspired by Todd Solondz and his sensibility , especially Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness and wanted to capture that darkly humorous spirit so prevalent in his works. Strangely enough, a while after I came up with my Jinglepuss concept/premise and was writing the script, Solondz came out with his own movie covering somewhat similar themes called ‘Wiener-Dog’ about a doomed Dachshund and its misadventures and its effects on those around it.

My 20 page script is an adaptation and re-imagining of a longer work-in-progress feature-length screenplay that delves more into the mythology of Jinglepuss and how its demise affects the entire community of its adopted neighbourhood.

I hope to create a satirical look at suburban life and the crazy characters that you can find there, that is as entertaining as it it is harrowing and suspenseful.

I plan to shoot this short script as a proof-of-concept for the feature-length film at my home and neighbourhood on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.
