This is a true story.
In 1990, my girlfriend Jing and I planned to go to Australia to study because we were having some troubles in China. At that time, one needed a support letter from one’s employer to apply for passport to go overseas. But Jing’s employer was a government department, and the director of the department, Huo, was a communist official. Huo had tried to date Jing for a long time but she always turned him down, so he blocked the issuance of the support letter she needed to apply for a passport.
We tried very hard to find people related to the issue to lobby Huo to agree to supply the letter, but failed. So I ended up going to Australia first, hoping that Huo would issue the support letter later. After I arrived in Australia, Jing and I realized that Huo had no intention of issuing the letter unless she agreed to date him. He was a corrupt official, and we reported the situation to the authorities with evidence about his corruption in an effort to make him lose his position, but failed because people in official positions cover for each other. This is common practice in China.
In Australia, I met a man named Lin who was a spy sent by the Chinese authorities to surveil Chinese dissidents in Australia. I set about trying to make Lin believe that Huo was a secret dissident. After a thrilling and complicated process, Lin became convinced that Huo was a dangerous dissident who was trying to overthrow Chinese communist rule, and reported it to his boss in China. The authorities in China then started to investigate Huo for corruption, and removed him from his official position. Subsequently, Jing got the support letter she needed to apply for a passport and came to Australia to reunite with me, and we got married in Australia.

Hi Jianguo, my name is Victor. I read your synopsis closely, and what struck me most isn’t just the anecdote itself, but what lies underneath it, a man whom the system won’t grant justice through normal channels, so he turns the state’s own machinery against one of its own. That mechanism — using the surveillance apparatus against itself — is a very powerful thriller engine, and I think there’s a narrative structure that could make it far more than a linear retelling.
I have a fairly concrete idea of how to approach it in terms of point of view and the order in which the story is told, but I’d rather share it with you directly than here. Would it work for you to continue by private message or email? I’m genuinely interested, and I’d also like to hear how much room you see for dramatizing the true story.
