Showing is a sexy, darkly funny short about a broke delivery girl who uses Zillow the way most people use Tinder. She seduces realtors during luxury apartment showings. But when one showing goes off-script, her fantasy life starts to crack.
Loved this, has a Promising Young Woman kind of vibe along with the part of Parasite where they’re living in the rich person’s house.
I am thrilled by how many great female led stories are in the competition. Showing, AuPair, Our Lady of Shame are all top tier.
That opening scene was so sexy and alluring. But as it went on, I felt really bad for Chloe/Abby, and I almost found myself in tears at the end. I could really see mysef in her - and also in Nick. It was a sad, thought-provoking and emotionally impactful story. So beautiful.
That was great.
I would add an encounter with a married realtor when delivering food. He takes out his wallet for a big tip to get rid of her but Chloé takes all the bills from the wallet while a kid peeks around dad’s leg. Chloé hands the kid extra breadsticks on the house with a wink.
@lucca_bosio I agree about feeling bad for the protagonist, even though she’s essentially a bad person. It takes real skill as a writer to balance that in a Nightcrawler or Breaking Bad kind of way. Sympathy and disgust being such a thin line.
@chipstar hey there, welcome to the forum and thanks for your comment! I like your suggestion. How much did you relate to Chloé, did you share Lucca and I in feeling sorry for her, or where do you land?
I don’t think I feel sorry for her. I do relate to feeling alone in a big city.
Her coping mecanism is extreme yet entertaining for this story. Shows like “million dollar listing” and house renovations exists because we all are curious how the 1 percent lives and our own to do list in the house we never get around to. Chloé is hooked on the taste of it.
The ending kinda reminded me of “Eternal sunshine”. Against all odds Abby and Nick probably are ment for eachother.
I really liked this one! When I finished it, as a guy, I thought “geez, I hope I didn’t like this one just because it had a lot of sex in it.” :-) But I went back through it and it definitely held up on a character level as well. I like that Nick calls her out right away and want to hear more of their conversation at the end.
you rarely read something that’s so unique as this, it felt like a breath of fresh air. such a likeable protagonist despite being a theoretically bad person.
