The Pioneer

The true life story of pioneering motion picture stuntman Yakima Canutt’s rise through the rodeo circuit to Hollywood, where he coordinated a legendary performance in STAGECOACH after surviving a life threatening on-set accident.

I feel like this was my favorite script so far! Just a really well crafted telling of a super interesting person’s life. I’m a little worried that the movie would need a big budget to recreate the period details and especially to do the stunts justice in their recreation, but I was seriously drawn in and absorbed through the whole thing. Nice work!

I’d love the credits to have actual footage of some of the stunts! Maybe even video of Yakima getting his Academy Award.

Truly this would be the most expensive of the scripts this year from the sounds of it. I wonder if you would need permission to shoot the behind the scenes of real movies and real people? From estates or producers? Or is it royalty free by now?
Reading Sundown’s wikipedia and wondering if he’d be a more interesting main character… the fact he’s so mysterious sounds intriguing. Not that I don’t like Yak.

I don’t think there’s any libel or slander rules for dead people so I guess it’s only really down to if there’s an estate who own the likeness. Even then I think it’s just good form to get rights, I don’t think it’s something you HAVE to do. Otherwise there’d be no historical films, right? Like nobody is saying we can’t put Nixon in a film because we didn’t get his grandchildren’s approval.
