Best Film of 2025 So Far?

Happy Monday folks!

As we fast approach the halfway mark of 2025, it’s got me curious – what’s the best film released this calendar year so far?

Whether it was a blockbuster experience for Sinners or Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, a midnight screening of Thunderbolts, something that chilled you like The Ugly Stepsister or Bring Her Back, a surprise hit like Black Bag or Friendship, prestige drama like I’m Still Here and The Brutalist, or something you think nobody has heard of yet – The Ballad of Wallis Island or The Girl with the Needle.

At Kinolime, we’re committed to listening to our audience. We want to know what you enjoy seeing in theatres, what you want to see more of, and what speaks to you – all so we can bring you film the films you deserve.

Let us know in the comments, let’s get a conversation started!

In Nigeria we don’t get every film released in theatres in a timely manner. So some films are from 2024 but we only see them in 2025. I saw the Materialists on Saturday and it was excellent. Also a movie called Twin Flame, is a Nigerian movie and good for what it is.

I vote Companion, though I haven’t been to many movies this year :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Materialists isn’t released in Ireland (where I live) until mid-August, so you’re two months ahead of us – not bad going! Looking forward to seeing that one and what Celine Song does next.

This is probably the first Anderson film I haven’t seen in cinemas since The Darjeeling Limited. My wife enjoyed it! Hopefully I find an opportunity to see on the big screen. What’s your favourite Anderson film?

Hi there and welcome to the forum. We’re pleased to have you.
Companion came and went for me, I didn’t catch it. I enjoyed Sophie Thatcher in Heretic, she seems like the next horror/thriller star!

Novacaine, Sinners, Mickey 17 :facepunch: Superman and 28 Days Later will be the movies of the summer.

Straightforward answer maybe but I liked Black Bag and Thunderbolts heaps. My daughter votes How to Train your Dragon.

For me, definitely Sinners. Best theater experience of the year so far.

Hi Lucca, welcome to the forum! I also loved Sinners, I wish I’d had chance to see it on 70mm while in New York, but missed out. Still incredible in a regular IMAX. Did you get chancer to catch it on film?

Hey Adam, question for you - I read that the director of the animated film directed the ‘live action’ (still largely CG animation, surely) and that it’s too similar to be worthwhile. What’s your take on that? I’m not exactly the target audience, but very curious. Can’t think of many (maybe any) situations where a director has a chance to remake their own film. Maybe Evil Dead II?

Yo. Yeah it’s pretty much the same. Does look good. To be honest I’m just glad for any small variation so I don’t have to watch the same one over and over :sunglasses:

I didn’t, unfortunately. There are rarely 70mm screenings in my country. It was a great viewing experience nonetheless.

Another vote for Sinners. Shout out to Memoir of a Snail also.

There’s shockingly few theatres anywhere in the world equipped for 70mm IMAX. It’s a real shame. It’s a five hour drive for me to get to one and when I lived in Europe… nada. Hopefully the success of Sinners and other films will encourage more… Don’t want it to be a dying art form.

I rather enjoyed Thunderbolts. I also enjoyed The Ballad of Wallis Island. I think 2025 is turning out to be a great movie theater experience.

Hey there, welcome to forum. I also loved Thunderbolts! Yet to see The Ballad of Wallis Island. Would also really recommend Magic Farm – it’s a weird little absurdist comedy drama on Mubi!

Weapons has been the one for me this year, waiting to see Him this weekend to compare and see which one does better overall.
